Dr. Jessica Moe holds an MD, FRCPC (emergency medicine), American Board Certification (emergency medicine), MSc (clinical epidemiology), and MA (international law and human rights). She is the scientific director of the Emergency Opioid Innovation Program within the BC Emergency Medicine Network. She also practices as an emergency physician at Vancouver General Hospital and BC Children’s Hospital.

Seth Long, MPH

Research Manager

Seth is a Public Health graduate from Simon Fraser University interested in Social Inequities and Health. He is also a trained chemist with various experiences in experimental research. He joined the EMED Study as a Project Coordinator in October 2021. Outside the work setting, Seth is a loving dad to a 2-year-old Golden Retriever, Dash. Seth is a food and coffee enthusiast. He loves exploring new places around the city with his partner and friends. Seth is also passionate about learning new languages. A fun fact about him, he understands three different languages and currently learning a fourth language.


Cindy Liu, BSc, CAPM

Cindy recently graduated from UBC studying a Combined Major in Sciences. She has been involved with the study since August 2021 and she was involved with the feasibility study in 2020. Her research interests include substance use and overdose prevention. In her spare time, Cindy enjoys playing golf, tennis and spending time with her two cats, Bean and Bamboo.


Elle Wang, MSc

Elle is a graduate from UBC interested in Epidemiology and public health. She joined the Moe Lab in July 2020 and has been involved in multiple projects. Elle loves playing with data and exploring the facts behind the data. During her spare time, she enjoys tasting delicious food, spending time with her two cats, and playing Guzheng (a traditional Chinese string instrument).


Maddie Newby, BA

Maddie recently graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology. She is currently a Research Assistant with the EMED study at Vancouver General Hospital. She is deeply passionate about health equity, with further research interests in substance use, sexual health, and Women and LGBTQIA+ health. In her spare time, Maddie loves skiing, climbing, and spending time outdoors with friends.


Khushi Dabla, BSc

Assistant Project Coordinator

Khushi is currently in the fourth year of her Integrated Science Degree, specializing in Immunology and Human Physiology. She is currently involved with EMED study at Vancouver General Hospital as a Clinical Research Assistant. She is passionate about helping people with substance use/mental health-related illnesses, and learning about the interconnection between various comorbidities. Outside of the Moe Lab, she is involved with clinical research concerning asthma and COPD at The Lung Centre, and presides over a UBC club that raises awareness and funds for people with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. In her spare time, Khushi likes to learn new dance choreographies, weight train, and play with her hamster.


Alisha Hussey, MPH

Medical Student

Vancouver General Hospital

Alisha is currently a medical student at UBC and previously completed a Master’s of Public Health with a focus on social inequities and health, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Molecular Biology. She has been involved with the EMED study as a Research Assistant since February 2021 and is now focusing primarily on healthcare provider engagement with the study. Her research interests include substance use and addictions and women’s health. She enjoys cycling, travelling, drinking copious amounts of coffee, and trying to keep her covid plant collection alive. In her free time, she continues her pursuit of finding the world’s best croissant. 


Sahi Hajirawala, BSc

Research Assistant

Vancouver General Hospital

Sahi recently graduated from UBC studying Microbiology and Immunology. He is currently involved with EMED study at Vancouver General Hospital. His research interests include substance use, mental health, and how it may stem from childhood trauma. Outside of the Moe Lab, he is involved with clinical research at the BC Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, as well as concurrent disorder research at Red Fish Healing Centre. In his spare time, Sahi enjoys playing unnecessarily complicated board games, badminton, and spending quality time with friends.


Emma Uphill, BA

Research Assistant

Emma recently graduated from SFU studying English and Health Sciences and will continue further education specializing in Indigenous Studies. She is currently a Research Assistant with the EMED study at Vancouver General Hospital. Emma is passionate about research related to substance use, Indigenous health and social determinants of health. She has a special interest in the mental health field, specifically in her work with individuals navigating eating disorder recovery and those in rehabilitation of acquired brain injuries. In her free time, Emma enjoys trying new coffee shops, paddle boarding and walking her dogs.


Ryan Wu, BSc

Ryan graduated from SFU in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Physiology. Ryan is a research assistant involved in the EMED study and is passionate about researching methods of improving patient quality of life. In his spare time, Ryan likes to lift weights, golf, and watch hockey.


Andrea Enriquez

Andrea is currently an incoming 4th-year student at UBC studying Nutritional Sciences. She is currently involved with the EMED study at St. Paul’s Hospital as a research assistant. She has a passion for health equity and public health. In her free time, Andrea likes to paint, read, and bake.


Emily Covell

Co-op Student

St. Paul’s Hospital

Emily is currently completing her B.Sc at UBC, and is majoring in biology. Through a co-op placement at St. Paul’s hospital, she is a research assistant with the EMED study. Emily is very passionate about harm reduction and reducing stigma related to substance use. In her free time Emily loves exploring the Gulf Islands, backpacking trips, and running.


Alyssa Kong

Alyssa is an undergraduate student pursuing a Microbiology major at UBC Okanagan. She is currently a co-op student at St. Paul’s Hospital, where she serves as a research assistant contributing to the EMED study. Outside of the EMED study, Alyssa has engaged in work in synthetic biology. Beyond her academic commitments, Alyssa has a passion for music, snowboarding, and channels her creativity through various forms of art.


Preshon Pillay

Preshon is currently a medical student at UAlberta and previously completed a Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering at UBC. He is currently a Research Assistant with the EMED study and is passionate about reducing stigma related to substance use. In his spare time, Preshon loves skiing, cycling, and enjoying the outdoors with friends. 


Willem Martzke

Volunteer Research Assistant

Willem is a 3rd year undergraduate student at UBC studying Cellular and Physiological Sciences. He is currently a volunteer research assistant at VGH for the EMED study where he hopes to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of opioid dependence treatment. Outside of his academics, Willem enjoys traveling, cooking, and outdoor adventure.
