Dr. Jessica Moe holds an MD, FRCPC (emergency medicine), American Board Certification (emergency medicine), MSc (clinical epidemiology), and MA (international law and human rights). She is the scientific director of the Emergency Opioid Innovation Program within the BC Emergency Medicine Network. She also practices as an emergency physician at Vancouver General Hospital and BC Children’s Hospital.

Seth Long, MPH

Research Manager

Multiple Sites

Seth is a Public Health graduate from Simon Fraser University interested in Social Inequities and Health. He is also a trained chemist with various experiences in experimental research. He joined the EMED Study as a Project Coordinator in October 2021. Outside the work setting, Seth is a loving dad to a 2-year-old Golden Retriever, Dash. Seth is a food and coffee enthusiast. He loves exploring new places around the city with his partner and friends. Seth is also passionate about learning new languages. A fun fact about him, he understands three different languages and currently learning a fourth language.


Elle Wang, MSc

Analytic Project Manager

Elle is a graduate from UBC interested in Epidemiology and public health. She joined the Moe Lab in July 2020 and has been involved in multiple projects. Elle loves playing with data and exploring the facts behind the data. During her spare time, she enjoys tasting delicious food, spending time with her two cats, and playing Guzheng (a traditional Chinese string instrument).


Cindy Liu, BSc, CAPM

Project Coordinator

Cindy recently graduated from UBC studying a Combined Major in Sciences. She has been involved with the study since August 2021 and she was involved with the feasibility study in 2020. Her research interests include substance use and overdose prevention. In her spare time, Cindy enjoys playing golf, tennis and spending time with her two cats, Bean and Bamboo.


Khushi Dabla, BSc

Assistant Project Coordinator

Khushi graduated with her Integrated Science Degree from UBC, specializing in Immunology and Human Physiology. She has been involved with the EMED Study since 2022 and currently serves as an Assistant Project Coordinator for BC sites. She is passionate about supporting individuals with substance use and mental health-related illnesses and exploring the interconnections between various comorbidities. Outside of the Moe Lab, Khushi co-founded the Global Outreach Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving healthcare access in low-resource communities worldwide. In her spare time, she enjoys learning new dance choreographies, weight training, and caring for her hamster.


Alisha Hussey, MPH, MD

PGY1 Emergency Medicine Resident

Vancouver General Hospital

Alisha is currently a first year emergency resident at Vancouver’s General Hospital and previously completed a Master’s of Public Health with a focus on social inequities and health, and a Bachelor’s of Science in Molecular Biology. She has been involved with the EMED study as a Research Assistant since February 2021 and is now focusing primarily on healthcare provider engagement with the study. Her research interests include substance use and addictions and women’s health. She enjoys cycling, travelling, drinking copious amounts of coffee, and trying to keep her covid plant collection alive. In her free time, she continues her pursuit of finding the world’s best croissant. 


Sahi Hajirawala, BSc

Research Assistant

Vancouver General Hospital

Sahi graduated from UBC with a BSc in Microbiology and Immunology and is pursuing his MSc in Experimental Medicine. He is currently involved with EMED study as a Research Assistant at Vancouver General Hospital. His research interests include substance use, mental health, and addictions. Outside of the Moe Lab, he is involved with clinical research at the Rapid Access Addictions Clinic, and as an advocate at a poverty law clinic. In his spare time, Sahi enjoys biking, rock climbing, and playing unnecessarily complicated board games.


Emma Uphill, BA

Research Assistant

Vancouver General Hospital

Emma recently graduated from SFU studying English and Health Sciences and will continue further education specializing in Indigenous Studies. She is currently a Research Assistant with the EMED study at Vancouver General Hospital. Emma is passionate about research related to substance use, Indigenous health and social determinants of health. She has a special interest in the mental health field, specifically in her work with individuals navigating eating disorder recovery and those in rehabilitation of acquired brain injuries. In her free time, Emma enjoys trying new coffee shops, paddle boarding and walking her dogs.


Jet Le

Co-op Student

Vancouver General Hospital

Jet is a 4th year undergraduate student currently completing a Combined Major in Sciences at UBC. He is a research assistant involved with the EMED study at both the Vancouver General Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital. Jet is passionate about medical research, particularly in the fields of substance use, virology and infectious diseases. Outside of school, he is a chess enthusiast, enjoys listening to music and plays recreational basketball.


Preshon Pillay

Preshon is currently a medical student at UAlberta and previously completed a Bachelor’s of Applied Science in Mechanical Engineering at UBC. He is currently a Research Assistant with the EMED study and is passionate about reducing stigma related to substance use. In his spare time, Preshon loves skiing, cycling, and enjoying the outdoors with friends. 


Navi Pandher

Research Assistant

Navi is a third-year undergraduate student completing a BSc in Neuroscience at UBC. She is currently a co-op student, working as a research assistant in the EMED Study at Vancouver General Hospital, and is passionate about improving healthcare practices and patient care. In her spare time, Navi loves baking, painting, and spending time playing outdoor sports with friends.


Eknoor Kaur

Research Assistant

St. Paul’s Hospital

Eknoor is an undergraduate student working towards a BSc at UBC, where she is pursuing a combined major in Microbiology, Immunology, and Computer Science. She is currently a co-op student at St. Paul’s Hospital, serving as a research assistant on the EMED study. Eknoor is passionate about a career in medicine, with a focus in substance use, immunology, and virology. Outside of her academic commitments, Eknoor enjoys exploring the outdoors and trying to chase sunsets with friends and family.


Willem Martzke

Volunteer Research Assistant

Willem is a 3rd year undergraduate student at UBC studying Cellular and Physiological Sciences. He is currently a volunteer research assistant at VGH for the EMED study where he hopes to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of opioid dependence treatment. Outside of his academics, Willem enjoys traveling, cooking, and outdoor adventure.


Peter Alexander

Volunteer Research Assistant

St. Paul’s Hospital

Peter is a recent medical school graduate of St. George’s Medical School and holds a MSc and BSc from the University of British Columbia. He has been involved in multiple research projects throughout out his academic career conducting primary research in substance induced psychosis as well as large clinical systematic reviews. He will be volunteering with EMED study while eagerly anticipating his Emergency Medicine residency placement. On his spare time, Peter likes to enjoy the north shore mountains where he can connect with nature and attempt to capture the stunning scenes as an armature photographer.


Clara Gale

Volunteer Research Assistant

Clara is in her third year at UBC studying biology in the honours program. She joined the Moe lab in October of 2024 and has a keen interest in pursuing emergency medicine in the future. In her free time, Clara enjoys baking, skiing and watching true crime documentaries.
